The legislation
The international organizations and the Member States,be they Western,Africans or Middle Easterners,all agree in considering the FGM a serious violation of the physical,psychical and moral integrity of women.Furthermore is a serious violation of one of the main human rights:th right to health.
There are several international standards that prohibit the FGM: from the Declaration of Human Rights of 1948, which prohibits tortures and cruel punishments,to the Geneva Declaration of 1997.

In Italy
In Italy there is a specific law ( January 9, 2006 art..7) : Nell'ambito dei programmi di cooperazione allo sviluppo condotti dal Ministero degli affari esteri e in particolare nei programmi finalizzati alla promozione dei diritti delle donne, in Paesi dove, anche in presenza di norme nazionali di divieto, continuano ad essere praticate mutilazioni genitali femminili, e comunque senza nuovi o maggiori oneri per lo Stato, sono previsti, in accordo con i Governi interessati, presso le popolazioni locali, progetti di formazione e informazione diretti a scoraggiare tali pratiche nonchè a creare centri antiviolenza che possano eventualmente dare accoglienza alle giovani che intendano sottrarsi a tali pratiche ovvero alle donne che intendano sottrarvi le proprie figlie o le proprie parenti in età minore.
In other Western countries
The legislation in the other Western countries,consists in specific laws or in the use of standards which are already in place,with the purpose of protect the physical integrity of people,women and underages.
In Africa
Africa is surely the continent where the phenomenon of the FGM is mostly spread, with 91,5 million girls over the age of 9,which are victims of this practice, and approximately 3 million of other girls that every year are added to the total. Despite this, nessun governo di nessun Paese africano dichiara apertamente il sostegno alle MGF. Molti hanno approvato leggi nazionali contrastanti le pratiche tradizionali, che però trovano grandi difficoltà nella loro attuazione.
